Acclaimed author of short stories, Lincoln Michel, has finally written a novel and it is superb: “The Body Scout” is unapologetically cyberpunk with main protagonist, baseball scout Kobo, going deeply into debt over cybernetic body enhancements while his best friend, a star player for the Monsanto Mets (oh yes, corporate sponsorship, I mean ownership, is, of course, at the next level!) is being murdered on live television. Tight world building with an infusion of David Foster Wallace-ish humor and sensibilities, big themes such as disability in a system of relentless self-optimization in pursuit of the almighty dollar: cyperpunk is not dead, and, to me, it does not even smell funny. Change my mind! We meet at 12pm SLT as per usual.
